- GENRE: sludge metal
- COUNTRY: USA
In one of their biggest hits, they plead to bury them in smoke – with riffs like these, it shouldn’t be hard to accomplish. Down are pioneers of Southern metal, though they’re no strangers to sludge and stoner elements as well. They have songs which crush you into pulp with their heaviness and emotions. But can one be even surprised? When among your bandmates you can count the stars of Pantera, Crowbar and Corrosion of Conformity, there really was no other way things could go…
History:
When Down was formed in 1991, its lineup consisted of true dab hands. Phil Anselmo of Pantera on vocals, Pepper Keenan of Corrosion of Conformity and Kirk Windstein of Crowbar on guitars, and Jimmy Bower of Eyehategod fame on drums. The guys had been friends for years at this point and shared a passion for classic doom metal bands such as Saint Vitus and Trouble. In 1992, they released a series of demos and three years later, their debut album, NOLA. The record’s widely considered to be Down’s magnum opus as well as a pioneering album for Southern metal. In 1996, the men went on a hiatus, to then come back in 2002 with another accomplished album – Down II: A Bustle in Your Hedgerow… The record was well-received, and after its release, the band went on another hiatus. They came back once again in 2006 to record their third album, Down III: Over the Under, a year later. Since then, Down have been active with more and less intense periods.
