Carach Angren

Symphonic? Yes. Black metal? Also yes. Or maybe just “Dutch horror metal,” as they themselves put it? Carach Angren is an absolute must-listen for those who like their extreme dark and intense, and as if it were lifted straight from the pages of folktales or even, at times, comic books. This Landgraaf band provides thrills of fear as well as delight.

History:

Carach Angren was formed in 2003 in the Dutch municipality of Landgraaf. Their name’s derived from The Lord of the Rings, where the phrase “carach angren” means “iron jaws.” The band was founded by Seregor and Ardek, and they were quickly joined by a drummer, Namtara, who stayed with the band until 2020. In 2004, they released a demo, a year later, followed it with an EP and in 2008, the time finally came for their full-length debut, Lammendam. Their crafty approach to symphonic black metal was well received by critics, but it was only with Death Came Through a Phantom Ship that Carach Angren kicked things into high gear. They joined Dark Funeral, among others, on tour, and their career was gaining momentum. With subsequent records, the Dutch have become more and more advanced technically and compositionally, though they’ve always remained true to the stylistic blueprints from their first releases. The band’s latest album is Franckensteina Strataemontanus from 2020.
