Gdy thrash zmierzał w kierunku „szybciej, mocniej, agresywniej, mroczniej”, Anthrax machnęli na to ręką. Podchodzili do gatunku na luzie, mieszając go chociażby z hardcore punkiem, a także składając fundamenty pod rap metal. Inspirowali się komiksami czy powieściami Stephena Kinga, nigdy nie brakło im pogody ducha, a łomot kontrowali zdrową dawką humoru. Nie bez powodu są częścią Wielkiej Czwórki thrashu.
Historia:
Anthrax powstał w 1981 roku w Nowym Jorku. Po czterech demówkach przedstawili się światu w pełnej krasie albumem „Fistful of Metal” – bardzo udaną hybrydą heavy i thrash metalu. Wydane rok później „Spreading the Disease”, czyli rzecz równie melodyjna, a przy tym bardziej thrashowa i oryginalna, przyniosła grupie pierwszy wielki hit, a więc „Madhouse”. Najważniejszy i chyba najpopularniejszy krążek grupy, „Among the Living”, przyniósł im wielką sławę, szereg przebojów, a także otwarcie na nowojorski hardcore punk w muzyce. „State of Euphoria” i „Persistence of Time” były kontynuacją rajdu Wąglika po sławę. Gdy w 1993 roku formację opuścił wokalista, Joey Belladonna, a zastąpił go John Bush z Armored Saint, Anthrax podpisał kontrakt na 10 milionów dolarów z Electra Records i wydał niedoceniane „Sound of White Noise”. Kolejne materiały formacji z lat 90. oraz „We’ve Come For You All” nie cieszyły się aż takimi sukcesami, lecz w XXI wieku zespół przeżył odrodzenie. Do składu wrócił Belladonna i razem z nim grupa nagrała świetnie przyjęte „Worship Music” oraz „For All Kings”. Popularność Anthrax wróciła na dobre – są w absolutnej czołówce najważniejszych zespołów w bogatej historii thrash metalu.
