When Death Angel were recording their phenomenal debut album – with which they made thrash metal history – they were still teenagers. Though not teenagers anymore, they still know how to play torrential, melodic and above all else, high-quality thrash. You don’t believe us? Come and see for yourselves then at this year’s edition of Mystic Festival.
History:
Death Angel was founded in 1982 and it was a band formed almost entirely by… cousins. In 1983, they released their first demo, and in 1984, there was some reshuffling in the vocalist position. Dennis Pepa, who had been serving as the band’s bassist and vocalist-shriekier, decided to keep to the four strings only and the microphone was handed down to Mark Osegueda – a distant relative of the band. In 1985, the band struck with the demo Kill As One, and two years later, with their debut album – The Ultra-Violence. After its premiere, the band toured across the US and in 1988, they released Frolic Through the Park, the lead single of which, “Bored,” made a permanent home for itself on the MTV airwaves. After the release of their third record, Act III, they were supposed to go on a legendary Clash of the Titans tour with Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax, but these plans were wrecked by a serious car crash that Andy got out of with critical injuries. The band disbanded only to return in 2004 with The Art of Dying. The album was positively received and quickly reminded people of the band’s greatness. The subsequent releases, especially The Dream Calls for Blood from 2013 or Humanicide from 2019, only reaffirmed that Death Angel is a brilliant star in the thrash metal constellation.
