Black metal has many shades other than the pitch-black darkness. For example, Der Weg einer Freiheit have taken it into highly atmospheric territories, bordering post-metal landscapes. Which means that the Germans are the experts in crossbreeding ruthlessly cold riffs with beautiful, etheric melodies. They’ll bring the best of the best to Mystic Festival.
History:
Der Weg einer Freiheit, which can be translated as “the way of freedom” in English, came to be in 2009 in Germany. The band quickly came to the conclusion that although they find many aesthetic elements of black metal deeply inspiring, the other aspects – not so much. Hence the penchant for the rather dark view of human nature and all of the mysteries of the dark side of our psyche, and notable absence of any occult or satanic elements. The first three records of the Bavarian band were critically acclaimed and quickly gained the Germans a loyal fanbase, but the real breakthrough came with their fourth album, Finisterre, which catapulted them into even higher a plane. Its follow-up, Noktvrn, together with last year’s Innern stablisied the band’s position as one of the most important names in contemporary black metal.
