- GENRE: death metal
- COUNTRY: Sweden
How does the Swedish death metal sound like? Grave is the essential band of the original, rawest form of this genre. They were one of the first ones to play in this playground, and, true to their name, they still grind riffs as dark as the inside of a grave. Are you ready for a serious serving of rot?!
History:
Grave had an impact on the extreme Swedish underground before even settling on this name. The band’s first life began in 1984 as Rising Power. A year later, the Swedes were active as Destroyer, then as Anguish; in the years 1986-1988, they were known as Corpse (that’s when they recorded their first demo) and only in 1988 did they settle on Grave. They started out things with a bang, releasing six demos. In 1991, they struck their debut album, a legendary record of the European death metal canon, Into the Grave, and a year later, came back with equally excellent You’ll Never See…. A subtle refashioning of the style came with the slower, more groove-oriented Soulless. The groove was then accentuated further on the follow-up Hating Life. Back from the Grave, released after a six-year-long break, saw the band’s return to classic death metal – retaining some full-swing moments – and it’s a style they’ve kept to ever since. The Scandinavian band’s latest album is the 2015 Out of Respect for the Dead.
