Absu

On one hand, it’s classic metal; on the other hand, it’s pitch black darkness. The black/thrash band Absu is shrouded in legend for a reason. They’ve taken all of the sulphur of black metal and added in the quintessential venom of thrash to tie it all together into blood-curdling occult stories.

History:

Before Absu became Absu two years had to go by from the band’s formation. They started out in 1989 as Dolmen. For a little while they went as Azathoth and only in 1991 they christened themselves Absu. They’ve been hard at work since then. Between 1991 and 1992, they released three demos and an EP – material which was a lot closer to death metal than anything they released since – and in 1993, they struck with their debut album Barathrum: V.I.T.R.I.O.L., also a thoroughly death metal record. From their sophomore record, The Sun of Tiphareth, onwards the band was moving ever closer to the black/thrash metal amalgam that they are known for. The occult and demonic lyrics paired with a stirring yet spiteful sound secured their cult and formidable status on the extreme music scene. In 2020, nine years after the release of their latest full-length album, Absu announced their disbandment. However, they reactivated last year.
