Polaris is one of those metalcore bands that are not afraid to step beyond its paradigm. They are no strangers to djent elements, nor to the inspired punchiness of alt-metal. The combination of powerful breakdowns and impassioned melodies is their staple by now. They are a true gem of the Australian scene.
History:
Polaris started where many a different band from all over the world did – in high school. The band met in 2012; though there were some lineup changes almost immediately, they were working on their music (they already released the single “Summit”) and in 2013, the 15-year-old Ryan Siew laid his talented hands on the guitar, having been found during public auditions. With him on board, the band debuted with the EP Dichotomy. In 2016, they released their second EP, The Guilt & The Grief, which reached no. 34 on Australian charts. Their year-younger, full-length album The Mortal Coil made quite the noise around the band on the metalcore scene. The two following albums fortified their status and showcased their meandering outside of metalcore bounds, for example in the realm of alt-metal. Before the release of their latest and most popular (at least thus far) album, Fatalism, Ryan Siew passed away. The band has been nominated for a slew of Australian awards and won one of them, the AIR Award, twice.
