Mystic Festival 2024: From the streets of New York to a worm-filled graveyard

Come June, in Gdansk, you’ll find out whether it’s easier to survive a nighttime walk through 1990s New York or a zombie apocalypse. Biohazard, Leprous, High On Fire and Endseeker join the festival program.

Biohazard

Talent is one thing, but it’s also good to be in the right place at the right time – New York in the 1990s was the countercultural center of the world. A melting pot where the influences of metal, hardcore/punk and rap mixed, shattering the old order. And in the middle of New York, precisely in Brooklyn, the banner of this revolution was carried by Biohazard. With such monumental albums as “Urban Discipline” (1992) and “State of the World Address” (1994), the secrets of their city’s darkest corners became known to the entire world. They didn’t stay in the mainstream for long, because this is music that belongs to the underground, but for loyal fans it’s not a problem after all. Especially since the band is again playing with their canonical lineup and as always – they take no prisoners.

Leprous

Although we recently hosted them at the festival, there are three good reasons to invite them again: firstly, they joined the program at the last minute and not all their fans managed to make it to Gdansk, secondly, they gave a fantastic show back then. Third and finally, and most importantly, you can never have enough of Leprous. In the widely defined prog metal scene of today one can hardly look for artists with broader interests and greater sensibility. Anyway, let’s give the floor to a reviewer from the British Prog magazine, who wrote about the Norwegians’ latest album, “Aphelion”, as follows: „The album touches on prog, djent, pop, funk, trip hop and electronica, but the result is much greater than the sum of its parts. Nobody else sounds like this: Leprous have entered uncharted territory, proving utterly fearless in the process”.

High On Fire

They debuted in 2000 with an album titled “The Art of Self Defense”, but as we all know, the best defense is a good offense. Since then, High On Fire have been bombarding us with metal that is heavy, raw and ugly, which is as it should be. The power trio led by Matt Pike, one of the most charismatic figures in American metal, is coming to Gdansk to sum up their quarter century on the scene and, at the same time, to present new material that is already recorded and waiting to be released.

Endseeker

Faithful to the rules of old school death metal, supposedly from Hamburg, but actually straight from hell. Their latest, fourth album, „Global Worming”, is the Germans’ darkest and heaviest work yet. It sounds like a bomb dropped on a graveyard, like a tribute to the best years of Swedish way of death, but with the understanding that we are in the 21st century and the apocalypse is just around the corner. „Global Worming revolves around a dystopian future where zombie worms overrun our planet and eat us all until we go extinct” – states Ben, the band’s guitarist. And yes, you can hear it perfectly.
